Spring Into the Weekend Around Chicagoland

May 20, 2011

It actually feels like Spring in the Chicago area. Amazing!

This weekend is supposed to be beautiful. You can certainly spend it Spring cleaning your home — look for tips this weekend at Chicago Real Estate Forum —  but, if you want to get out, here are some other ways to enjoy the Chicago area:

The festival season in Chicago kicks off this weekend with Mayfest, a three-day celebration in the heart of Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood that attracts about 15,000 people each year.

Mayfest (Maifest in German) is the traditional German celebration of the arrival of spring. Maifest is still celebrated throughout Germany with the maypole (maibaum) decorated to show off the history and crafts of the local village or town.

The festival will include “Chicago’s BEST bands” plus other entertainment, food and artisans.

On Sunday, the Higgins Animal Clinic Pet Parade and Pet Expo is open for people and their furry friends. Deck out your pet and enter it in a category, such as “Pet and Owner Look Alike,” “Best Dressed” and “Best Trick.” Registration is open from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday.

From 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, the German tradition of Mayfest will be celebrated with German dancing and singing around the Maypole.

Saturday is Chicago KIDS Day. Put on by real people who work in the community, the day offers a fun and entertaining way to educate kids about health and safety. Chicago KIDS Day is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and admission is free.

Mayfest was voted as the “Best Fest of 2009” by Chicagoans.
