This Story Might Bug You, but it Can’t Be Ignored

Chicago has scurried up a list we would rather not be on at all.

The pest control company Terminix has released its 2011 Most Bedbug-Infested Cities list with Chicago at No. 4.

bedbugWe were No. 5 last year.

Even worse, Orkin pest control released its list of Top 50 Bedbug Cities, which ranked the cities in the order of the number of bedbug treatments Orkin performed from January through April of this year. Chicago is No. 2!

Bedbugs are a national epidemic that are increasingly plaguing homeowners, apartments, hotels and even retail centers.

In fact, Terminix reports that most U.S. cities and states reported bedbug activity during the last year.

“This year’s ranking gives credence to the fact that major American cities are certainly at risk, but bedbugs aren’t found only in big, metropolitan areas,” said Paul Curtis, entomologist for Terminix.

“The Memorial Day holiday, marking the unofficial start to the summer vacation travel season, is quickly approaching so it’s very important for the general public to be educated on the warning signs that indicate bedbugs may be present on the road and at home.”

As we move into Memorial Day weekend, residents who travel and stay in a hotel should use these tips from Terminix to protect themselves from bedbugs:

bedbug stains

Bedbug stains are evidence of a bedbug infestation.

*Check hotel headboards, mattresses and box springs for bedbugs and dark blood spots.

*Hang all your clothes; leave nothing lying on the bed or furniture.

*Avoid unpacking clothing and storing it in the hotel’s furniture drawers.

*Store luggage on a rack as far from the bed as possible.

*If you think your hotel has bedbugs, ask for a change of rooms.

*Vacuum your suitcases when you return home and immediately wash all your clothing in hot water.

“Bedbugs pose a growing health concern,” Curtis added. “Their bites may cause itchy welts and rashes, but they may also go undetected for weeks or months in a home as they quickly reproduce. It’s important for consumers to know the signs and have their home inspected by a professional.”
