Memorial Day Celebrations Around Chicagoland

May 27, 2011

There’s no better way to kick off your Memorial Day weekend than with a parade.

On Saturday, May 28, Chicago’s Memorial Day Parade will step off at noon at State Street and will proceed south from Lake Street to Van Buren.

The parade draws about 10,000 spectators each year and is considered one of the largest Memorial Day parades in the nation.

Memorial Day parades have graced the streets of Chicago since 1870. In 1997, former Mayor Richard M. Daley made it an annual tradition as a day to be thankful that we live in a country where freedom, justice and democracy are proudly defended.

This year, new Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will take the reigns of the parade.

This year’s Grand Marshal will be General Raymond T. Odierno, United States Army, Commander, U.S. Joint Forces Command. During the parade, Odierno will swear in new recruits representing many branches of service.

Before the parade, at 11 a.m., the Chicago Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony will take place at the Eternal Fame on Daley Plaza in Chicago at Dearborn and Washington Streets.
