June Will Be Momentous in Chicago

May 31, 2011

Welcome, our Chicago real estate friends, to June.

As always, we are here to report many of the causes and interests the country focuses on during this month, including one observance that will honored in a pivotal way in Chicago and the state of Illinois.

Let’s get started:

On the home front, June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month, National Bathroom Reading Month, Potty Training Awareness Month and National Safety Month.

Plant fresh fruits and vegetables alongside perennials in your home's garden and you'll cover two of June's observances.

Outside the home, June is Great Outdoors Month, National Flag Month, Perennial Gardening Month and National Rose Month.

June is not just Rebuild Your Life Month, it’s also Effective Communications Month, Professional Wellness Month, Entrepreneurs Do It Yourself Marketing Month and Lane Courtesy Month.

Here are some contradictions: June is National Dairy Month and Dairy Alternative Month as well as National Candy Month and National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month.

Out of place observances include National Fireworks Month (should be July); Turkey Lovers Month (they need the support in November) and National Papaya Month (this occurs in September too).

Some other observances for June:

* Cancer from the Sun Month

* Celibacy Awareness Month

* Child Vision Awareness Month

* Children’s Awareness Month

* International Childhood Cancer Campaign Month

* International Men’s Month

* National Accordion Awareness Month

* National Aphasia Awareness Month

* National Camping Month

* National Hunger Awareness Month

* National Iced Tea Month

* National Rivers Month

* National Seafood Month

* National Soul Food Month

* Pharmacists Declare War on Alcoholism Month

* Sports America Kids Month

* Student Safety Month

* Vision Research Month

* World Infertility Month

June is also Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, which will be celebrated in a big way in Illinois. On June 1, civil union licenses will start being issued throughout the state.

Civil unions give same-sex couples the same rights as married couples when it comes to parenting, making medical decisions, inheritances and more.

The law also applies to heterosexual couples.

“I’m thrilled this day has finally come,” said Cook County Clerk David Orr. “This will be a joyous day for all couples — gay and straight — who want to make history as part of the inaugural group of civil unions.”

The Cook County Clerk’s Office will open its downtown office early on June 1 to mark the momentous occasion. Couples can start lining up outside the Daley Center, 50 W. Washington St., at 6 a.m. to visit the Vital Records office and get a license.

The first couple in line will get a gift package, plus there will be other presents distributed by raffle. The Clerk’s office will invite all couples back to a party room for cake and chocolate donated by Eli’s Cheesecake and Illinois Nut & Candy.

By law, couples must wait until the day after they get their license to have a ceremony, so to celebrate the first day of civil union ceremonies in Illinois, the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations’ Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues will host 30 civil union ceremonies at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, in Wrigley Square at Millennium Park, Randolph Street and Michigan Avenue.

Governor Pat Quinn will attend, and Cook County Clerk David Orr, the Hon. Timothy C. Evans, Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, and members of the Alliance of Illinois Judges will officiate the civil union ceremonies.

“What a terrific way for the City of Chicago to ring in civil unions,” said Bernard Cherkasov, CEO of Equality Illinois. “Having dozens of couples celebrate their love and commitment literally surrounded by the entire city is such a powerful symbol for how far we have come as a society.”

Have a wonderful month of June!
