City Celebrates Cycling

June 14, 2011

Did you know that we are in the middle of Bike to Work Week?

Did you also know that Chicago has been named the best big city for bicycling?

We got that designation thanks to more than 110 miles of bike lanes, 50 miles of bike paths and 12,000 bike racks. The city is celebrating biking this week with activities and events galore.

Registration is required and the ride is limited to 150 participants, so click here to register now.

Check in opens at 6 p.m. and the ride leaves Buckingham Fountain at 6:30 p.m. Helmets are required.

Don’t have a bike but want to go? Rent one from the B-cycle self-service rental station conveniently located at Buckingham Fountain.

On Thursday, June 16, ride your bike to Grant Park for Bike Chicago Movies in the Park. This week’s movie will be the award-winning 1979 classic, “Breaking Away,” which is about four friends who graduate from high school in Bloomington, Indiana. Wonder if they ride bikes in the movie.

The film starts at dusk at the northwest corner of Columbus and Balbo; Goose Island 312 beer garden will be on hand, but remember: Don’t drink and bike.

Finally, thousands of cyclists are expected to ride to Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington, Chicago, on Friday, June 17 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. for a Bike to Work Rally that will include music, breakfast, a free t-shirt, Sierra Mist Natural Bike Valet and more.

A week full of fun and good exercise too. Ain’t it great living in Chicago?

Keep on Bikin’!
