June 20, 2011

Are you a do-it-yourselfer? Do you like to tackle tough projects in your Chicago home? If so, this article is not for you.

Now, are you clueless about tools and how to use them? Want to be a reality star? If so, read on.

The Craftsman brand is searching for the next breakout reality star to be part of a new interactive online series called, “SCREW*D: Where Survival Comes Down to the Right Tools.”

man with tools looking goofy in front of a computer. The search is on for a man — or a woman — age 21 and over who has little or no tool skills but who does have a big personality and is comfortable in front of a camera.

The chosen one will be the host of this reality series and will earn up to $50,000 plus free room and board for the duration of the show.

“Craftsman has been providing trusted, durable and innovative tools in the marketplace since 1927,” said Scott Freidheim, executive vice president at Sears Holdings and president, Kenmore, Craftsman & DieHard. “We’re about to witness how Craftsman tools can empower a DIY novice to successfully complete a range of tasks that enable them to overcome extreme conditions.”

Applications are being accepted through Thursday, July 7 online and at an event next Saturday.

To apply online, create a video no longer than two minutes that answers these questions:

1. Tell your story: Why do you want to learn to work with tools? What do you want to build that you don’t know how?

2. How unhandy are you? Show us a recent project that went awry or give us a tour of your toolbox (or lack thereof).

Be funny, use props and pictures, don’t wear anything with a logo on it, and enter at craftsmanscrewd.com.

There will also be an open audition in Chicago on Saturday, June 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Craftsman Experience, 233 W. Huron. Be ready to act out your video in person.

The role of SCREW*D hero will start August 14 and will continue full-time for 12 weeks. You must be available from August 10 through October 23 and be willing to travel to remote, wild locations to undertake a variety of demanding challenges with tools.
