Chicago Suburb Named Best Family City

July 08, 2011

The No. 1 city in the country to raise a family is right here outside of Chicago.

Family Circle magazine has released its list of “10 Best Towns for Families: 2011” with the town of St. Charles perched atop.

It was the only city in Illinois to make the list.

The magazine chose St. Charles because of its affordable housing, strong schools and great residents.

beautiful st. charlesLocated 35 miles west of downtown Chicago in both DuPage and Kane Counties, St. Charles, known as the Pride of the Fox River, has a population of about 33,000 and a median home price of $221,000.

Its more than 2,100 businesses employ over 34,200 people.

“We are thrilled to be included in Family Circle’s “Best Towns and Cities” Survey and be ranked number one in the country!” said St. Charles Mayor Donald DeWitte.

“Now everyone will know what we have known all along — that St. Charles is a gem among cities and a wonderful place to live. It is a great city, with many opportunities to work or have fun. We pride ourselves on maintaining a safe, affordable community and a high quality of life.”

Family Circle studied 2,500 cities and towns with populations between 15,000 and 150,000 and median incomes between $55,000 and $95,000.

The magazine considered such attributes as affordable housing, good neighbors, green spaces, strong public schools, access to health care, low crime rate, financial stability and giving spirits before narrowing the list down to 1,000, then to 10.

Did we mention that St. Charles, Illinois is No. 1?

It’s not the first accolade for this city. St. Charles was named one of the “150 Great Places in Illinois” by the American Institute of Architects Illinois and one of the “Top 10 Towns to Live In” by West Suburban Magazine.

“St. Charles is a wonderful place to call home, work for a business located here or open your own business, and raise a family,” said St. Charles Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Lori Hewitt.

“We are a large enough community where we have all of the amenities such as great schools, wonderful parks and recreation, hotels, riverside restaurants and live theatre -– but a small enough community where we really care about each other and give back.”

Family Circle’s article is featured in the magazine’s August issue, which is on newsstands now.
