Bet this New Chicagoland Facility is a Success

July 18, 2011

One way to beat the heat this week is to check out Illinois’ newest casino. It’s not an hour away from the city or on a riverboat, but right outside of Chicago in Des Plaines.

Rivers Casino, 3000 S. River Road, opened its doors to the public on Monday.

The 147,000-square-foot, single-story facility at the corner of Devon Avenue and River Road includes a 44,000-square-foot gaming floor featuring more than 1,050 slot machines and 48 gametables with the highest limits in the state.

The metro Chicago real estate site also offers four restaurants, a cocktail lounge and a sports bar with a multi-leveled outdoor patio that can be switched to a music venue to accommodate 500 people.

It is the first casino in the nation to apply for LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) certification for its green design, which includes an internal irrigation system.

The non-smoking facility offers 2,300 self-parking spaces as well as valet services and plans to eventually add shuttle service from nearby O’Hare Airport, as well as Midway Airport, McCormick Place and certain hotels throughout downtown Chicago and surrounding areas.

“Rivers will raise the bar for gaming and entertainment in the Midwest,” said Greg Carlin, Rivers Casino CEO. “We have created a unique and exciting experience that will appeal to enthusiastic gamers, entertainment seekers, tourists and conventioneers.”

The casino is estimated to bring in up to $6 million dollars annually for Des Plaines and close to $150 million in taxes for Illinois each year. It has already created more than 1,000 jobs, and the web site says the casino is currently hiring for all positions.

You must be 21 to enter the casino, which is open for 22 hours every day from 9 a.m. to 7 a.m. Remember, you high rollers, that any prize over $1,119 will be taxed.

A bill to add more casinos in Illinois, and to Chicago, is still being considered by the Illinois General Assembly.

Until then, your best bet for gambling right outside the city is at playrivers.com.

Good luck!
