Sunday a New Observance in Illinois

August 06, 2011

August 7 has been proclaimed Purple Heart Day in Illinois, and though it won’t be official until next year, the state’s Governor is asking all residents to observe it this year as well.

Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation on Friday that declared August 7 as Purple Heart Day, a day to honor and remember Illinois service members who were wounded or killed in action and honored with a Purple Heart.

The law, named House Bill 1537, was sponsored by Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia (D-Aurora) and Sen. Linda Holmes (D-Aurora).

Because the legislation won’t officially take effect until 2012, Governor Quinn also signed a proclamation this week to make sure the observance of Purple Heart Day begins this Sunday.

“Men and women of the U.S. military, especially those that sacrificed life or limb, deserve the honor and respect of all Americans,” said Governor Quinn. “I am proud to remember our Veterans by adding this ceremonial day for those who bravely served and protected the United States.”

The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration still awarded to members of the United State military. It was created by General George Washington on August 7, 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, and it was revived on the 200th anniversary of his birthday in 1932 as the Purple Heart.

Nearly 2 million Purple Hearts have been awarded to combat veterans since World War I.

Take a moment this Sunday to honor those who have fought for our country.

“The Purple Heart is an honor available to all,” said Daniel Finn, State Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, “but desired by none.”

Thanks for writing this article on Illinois passing a Bill to make August 7 the official Purple Heart Day in your State. Congratulation to the wounded warriors in Illinois because you now have your State officially recognizing the day you have always celebrated. In the State of Florida, we have been trying to get Purple Heart Day Bill SB 704 sponsored by Senator Sachs passed and we will try again in 2012.
