Date Reminds Homeowners to Call Before Digging

August 11, 2011

It’s 8-11. If you are an Illinois homeowner ready to embark on a digging project in your yard, those are three important numbers you should call.

August 11 and August 2011 are natural reminders to homeowners and contractors in Illinois to call JULIE at 8-1-1 before any type of digging project at your home.

Dog with his head inside the hole he dug.According to the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), an underground utility line is damaged during digging projects once every three minutes in the United States. Of those, 34 percent occurred because the free 8-1-1 call was never made.

This is a safety step not to be missed. Calling 8-1-1 before any digging project can help you avoid personal injury and repair costs and keep your community free of utility damage and inconvenient outages.

“There is no reason to take a chance when it comes to safety,” said Kevin Chmura, director of public relations for Joliet-based JULIE, Inc. “With more utility companies delivering critical services underground, homeowners and contractors are encouraged to simply call 8-1-1.”

When you call JULIE, a professional locator will be sent to your home to mark the approximate locations of utility lines on your property so you know where not to dig.

You should call 8-1-1 whether you are adding a new room to your home, installing a deck or fence or simply planting a tree or shrub.

You probably don’t need to call when digging a small grave for a recently passed pet goldfish, but don’t take my word on it.

JULIE call center agents are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at, say it with me: 8-1-1. You can also visit illinois1call.com to enter your utility locate request via the new E-Request and to get more digging information.
