Fabulous Chicago Real Estate Up for Grabs

August 17, 2011

The race to win a lavish apartment located in a luxury Chicago real estate high-rise is about to begin.

Starting Thursday, August 18, you can start entering twice a day to win the HGTV Urban Oasis 2011, in which the grand prize is a one-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath luxury apartment in Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago.

The view from the apartment

The apartment's spectacular view.

The 35th-floor unit includes 1,000 square feet of living space, 10-foot ceilings, an in-unit washer and dryer, generous closet space and spectacular views of Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, Navy Pier, the city skyline, Millennium Park and two bends of the L train tracks.

The home was designed by HGTV interior designer Vern Yip to represent Chicago architecture and history. The color scheme was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s original home and studio in Oak Park, where the famed architect brought colors from his landscape into his home.

Some of Yip’s touches for the apartment include:

*A color scheme of warm greens, ochres, reds and browns from the HGTV Sherwin Williams Global Spice palette.

*Art that was commissioned specifically for the unit from local artists, including an over-sized, cherry-wood sconce that celebrates Frank Lloyd Wright’s Tree of Life design.

*Antique and vintage decor from Chicago’s past, including a wood clock from a demolished Chicago-area soda shop.

*A kitchen with caramel-colored maple cabinets, a row of glass wall cabinets, solid-surface counter-tops honoring Chicago’s beaches, and echo window detailing found in many Chicago buildings, including the Water Tower.

*Lots of hidden storage, like in the bedroom, where custom-made art pedestals that support an art sculpture open up for extra storage space.

*Floral arrangements in the living room and master bath with natural roses that were preserved in an eco-friendly way to keep them garden-fresh and color-saturated for up to three years.

This glazed terra-cotta eagle was salvaged from the facade of the Charles Brewer building, a Chicago structure that was demolished years ago.

Ready to win this fabulous place? The HGTV Urban Oasis 2011 Giveaway begins August 18 and runs through October 7. You can enter online twice each day — once on and once on — or by mail as many times as you want.

According to the rules, “The winner will be contacted either by phone, email, in writing or in person via televised ambush by HGTV at the winner’s home.”

Want to decorate like Yip? Among the local places where he found antiques and treasures include the Frank Lloyd Wright store in his original home and studio in Oak Park, the gift store at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Scout, Foursided, Post 27, SG Grand, Urban Remains, Jayson Home + Garden, Stitch, Broadway Antique Market and the Edgewater Antique Market.

Good luck!
