Weekend Events Via Air, Water and Ground

One of my favorite memories puts me on the roof of a Chicago real estate high-rise as Thunderbirds and Golden Knights zipped by my head.

air show over chicagoWhether you spend time in Chicago this weekend on a roof or down by the lake, you’ll get to experience the 53rd annual Air and Water Show, the largest free show of its kind in the United States.

More than two million spectators are expected to line the lakefront from Fullerton to Oak Street, with North Avenue Beach as a focal point, on Saturday and Sunday, August 20-21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If air and water aren’t your thing, don’t fret. There’s plenty going on around the Chicago area this weekend.

*Glenwood Avenue Arts Fest: This 10th annual event features art from more than 100 artists, open studios, kids activities and live entertainment on three outdoor stages. The fest takes place in Chicago’s historic Rogers Park neighborhood at Glenwood and Farwell Avenues on Friday, August 19 from 6 to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, August 20-21, from noon to 9 p.m.

*Kitchen Sink Composting: Learn about worm composting and leave with your own kitchen composting bin, complete with worms. Cost is $30 per worm bin for the class, which will take place at the Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave., Chicago, on Saturday, August 20 from 10 a.m. to noon.

*Wrigleyville Block Party: The Cubs are hosting the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend, and that calls for a block party! Set for Friday-Sunday, August 19-21 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., this is the third party this summer on the grounds of the Friendly Confines and will include food, music from local bands and activities for kids.

*Chicago O’Hare Summer Antiques Show and Sale: This 36th annual show features 60 national dealers showcasing furniture, art, vintage clothing, jewelry and more. The $10 admission gets you in all three days and includes free parking at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, 5555 N. River Road in Rosemont. Times are Friday and Saturday, August 19-20, noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 21 from noon to 5 p.m.

*Long Grove Fine Art & Wine Festival: This 23rd annual event will be held in the recently expanded and landscaped Archer Municipal Lot near Fountain Square, 343 Old McHenry Rd., Long Grove, where more than 90 juried artists will sell their art and wares. There will also be live music at this fest, which is set for Saturday, August 20 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

*Wright Ride: Join cyclists of all ages for a bike ride through the near west suburbs for the 7th annual event named after Frank Lloyd Wright on Sunday, August 21. There are 18, 30, 50 and 62 mile route options. Sign-in is from 6 to 9 a.m. in downtown Oak Park, at Marion and Westgate Streets.
