Preparing for Disasters in Chicago

August 31, 2011

Chicago wind stormWhenever we see disasters on television, each of us react differently. Some of us are thankful that we weren’t in that situation, while others assume that something similar will never happen to them. However, with the recent natural disasters that have hit the eastern part of the United States, television viewers never know when they may be the ones on the other side of the fence.

With the power of Hurricane Irene on full display, it’s clear that not much can be done to protect your home from certain disasters. While precautions like storm shutters or reinforced storm rooms may be wise additions, sometimes nature takes its course regardless. A recent post on the

Equifax Personal Finance Blog says that one way homeowners can protect themselves is by preparing to file an insurance claim.

In “

Natural Disaster Insurance Claims: What to Do When a Natural Disaster Strikes,” insurance expert Linda Rey discusses the different types of insurance you may need. In preparation for filing a claim, you will want to keep a photo or video inventory of your belongings. Although this is a vital step, Rey says it is carried out by only one-third of policy owners. You also need to save insurance policies; reporting information; and receipts for large items in an easy-to-access place so you can grab them on the run. Having all of this information in one place can help expedite your claims in case of emergency.
