Iconic Chicago Real Estate Looking for Redesign Team

September 04, 2011

Help Wanted: Navy Pier Inc. (NPI) is looking for a few good people to redevelop the historic Chicago attraction.

The new not-for-profit group that runs Navy Pier has developed a $155-million rehab plan called Centennial Vision and has launched an international contest to find the right team for the job.

The hunt is on to find well-rounded teams that include architects, landscape architects, urban designers, graphic designers, lighting designers, art curators and engineers “to reimagine the public spaces at Navy Pier.”

This design competition includes monetary prizes: Navy Pier Inc.’s board will select five finalists from the submitted applications and each finalist will receive a stipend of $50,000.

“Navy Pier provides a truly unique opportunity for a design team or teams to have a profound impact on one of the most iconic, visible public spaces in Chicago and a central piece of our city’s fabric,” said Sarah Garvey, chair of the NPI Board.

The goal of the redesign is to maintain the Pier’s family appeal while attracting more adults and year-round visitors with upscale dining and entertainment options surrounded by more aesthetically appealing public spaces.

Team submissions must be in by October 6. Winners will be announced next February.

“A major goal of redesigning the Pierscape at Navy Pier is to help make Navy Pier a truly world-class destination,” said Marilynn Gardner, President of NPI. “World class means taking advantage of the Pier’s unique context and blending it with a design that is both respectful of the Pier’s history but also forward-looking.”
