Help Move the Planet Into a Greener Direction

September 22, 2011

This Saturday, you can visit energy-efficient metro Chicago real estate and participate in Moving Planet Day at the same time.

Green Connections, an Oak Park-based group that focuses on sustainable initiatives, is hosting a bike tour in the Chicago suburb on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m.

On the GCC bike tour, participants can tour 15 homes and community sites that promote sustainability in the neighborhood, including these initiatives:

*Renewable and energy efficiency

*Geothermal heating and cooling systems

*Solar panels

*Composting

*Water and resource conservation

*Gardens with locally grown, chemical-free food

*Toxic-free building materials

Each site will feature a demonstration of the green initiatives and how they foster sustainability in the community, and participants will have a chance to speak with homeowners on their experiences with going green.

“We’re hoping sustainability-minded individuals will join the ride with their neighbors, friends, families, or co-workers,” said Ana Garcia-Doyle, a member of the Green Connection Bike Tour planning committee. “We want people to participate and feel that they’re a part of something big -– that they’ll see this as one great opportunity to get moving on the green initiatives they’ve been considering.”

While the tours are self-guided and free, there will be an after-tour gathering from 4 to 5 p.m. at Field Park, located at Berkshire and Woodbine, where $5 donations would be appreciated.

Don’t have a bike? You can rent one for $11, including helmet and lock, from Greenline Wheels on Marion street in Oak Park.

Why bike at all? The Green Connections Bike Tour is being held on 350.org’s Moving Planet Day, a worldwide event that focuses on moving away from fossil fuels. One of the best ways to do that is to ditch the car in favor of a bike, skates, a scooter or your own two feet.
