Event Meant to Reunite Residents with Their Money

October 03, 2011

Hey, Chicago real estate owners and renters, you might have some money or property owed you, and you can find out on Tuesday. Well, actually, any day.

Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is hosting a Cash Dash event on October 4 in West Chicago, where officials will be on hand to help residents search to see if the state is holding money or unclaimed property that belongs to them.

Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is expected to attend Tuesday's Cash Dash event.

According to the Treasurer’s office, 30,300 residents claimed funds from the Cash Dash program equaling $59 million last year. This year, there have already been more than 98,000 claims totaling more than $70 million.

The unclaimed funds could include inactive bank accounts, abandoned security deposit boxes, wage or commission checks, stocks, bonds or mutual funds, bill over-payments or life insurance policies.

The State Treasurer’s office often sets up Cash Dash events to help residents locate what’s owed them, and Tuesday’s will do just that, but you don’t have to attend to cash in.

You can find out if you are owed unclaimed money or property by visiting treasurer.il.gov. If you find your name, just print out a claim form and follow the directions.

Still would rather do it in person and can’t make the event on Tuesday? You can get a Cash Dash representative to come to your office or event.

It’s worth checking out. You never know what you might find.
