Famous Metro Chicago Real Estate For Sale

October 21, 2011

I grew up on John Hughes movies, many of which were filmed in impressive parcels of Chicago real estate located right here around the North Shore.

Now, the North Shore home in which Hughes wrote many of those classics has been put up for sale.

The 11,233-square-foot estate, located within a block of Lake Michigan at 855 E. Westminster Avenue in Lake Forest, is priced at $5.89 million.

Designed by architect Edwin Hill Clark and built in 1930, the Tudor-style mansion went through a large 1992 addition and today offers six bedrooms, six full- and four half-bathrooms, six fireplaces, an office suite, a media room, a sun room, 11-foot ceilings, a swimming pool, four terraces and a three-car garage on a 2.1-acre lot.

John W. Hughes, Jr., was a screenwriter, director and producer of many wonderful coming-of-age movies that helped me get through my teens.

Born in Michigan, Hughes moved to Northbrook at the age of 12 and attended Glenbrook North High School, a place that would provide inspiration for several of his films. In fact, some of his movies are set in Shermer, Illinois, in recognition of Northbrook’s original name, Shermerville.

Hughes lived in his Lake Forest estate until August of 2009, when he suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 59.

It is not surprising that his widow, Nancy, listed the home she shared with her late husband; Nancy now lives in a 6,700-square-foot mansion about three blocks away that she purchased for $5.2 million in late 2009.

This is the third home in recent years to be put up for sale on the North Shore related to John Hughes.

The Highland Park home that belonged to Cameron in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” has been on and off the market for the past couple years, and the Winnetka home where the “Home Alone” movies were filmed hit the market at $2.4 million in May before recently dropped its asking price to $1.95 million.
