With fall rapidly approaching, chances are good that your child is already playing his or her favorite sport. If your child plays for a school or youth team, they need a sports physical to ensure proper health. You’ve probably been required to provide copies of

health insurance forms as well.

Linda Rey shares some important information concerning children’s health insurance on the Equifax Finance Blog. Her article, “

Sport Health Insurance for Kids: What Parents Need to Know,” offers some advice for making sure your child is properly protected.

Rey suggests reviewing your regular health insurance plan to make sure that it includes sports insurance coverage. Some plans cover it, while others do not. She spoke to the claims department of a major health insurance carrier and found that there were not exclusions for specific sports related activities. However, Rey strongly suggests checking your coverage and reviewing it with your agent just to be safe. Another thing to remember is that the mandatory sports physical for your child is probably covered by your copay or deductible.

Sports teams often travel out-of-state to play games, and some teams even visit other countries. If your child is participating in these games, review your insurance policy to determine coverage. Traveling internationally may require travel insurance, so you should consult your agent.
