Spice Drawers, Wood Floors, and Recycling Areas … Today’s Top Design Trends

What are the burning, most up-to-date kitchen and bath styles in Chicago new homes and remodels?

In celebration of kitchen and bath month, Builder magazine interviewed some of the nation’s top designers to find out what today’s hottest trends are in kitchen and bath design.

The designers reported getting increased requests for built-in recycling areas, spice drawers, farmhouse-style sinks, stone countertops (like honed surfaces, composite quartz, and soapstone), glass tiles, colored accent walls, white cabinets, wood floors and low-flow showerheads.

And what’s out? Ice machines, trash compactors, formal living rooms, wallpaper and granite (except exotic types) are all heading out, report the designers.

The overarching design trends revolve around a few common themes, including water and energy efficiency upgrades and modifications; high-quality, simple lasting design; larger great rooms, more open spaces that includes the living room, kitchen, family room, media area and flex spaces; a new focus on the kitchen as a living space and not just a cooking space; and cost savings are key, even in the high-end of the market, everyone is focused on saving as much as possible.

One of the designers quoted in the article stated that design trends are local, based largely on the preferences in specific regions of the country. So what are you seeing in Chicago real estate?
