Orren Pickell wins Crystal Key Award for Kenilworth Remodel

November 16, 2011

Chicagoland Real Estate Forum congratulates Orren Pickell Designers and Builders for winning a Crystal Key Award in Remodeling for a home at 100 Abingdon Ave. in Kenilworth.

Suited on one of Kenilworth’s most visible properties, this home was long considered a neglected neighborhood ‘ugly duckling.’ With a white-painted brick exterior, oddly shaped roof domes, unkempt landscaping and an indoor pool that had fallen into disrepair, many would have considered this home a tear-down with no option to renovate effectively.

One family saw the structure’s hidden potential and the home was saved from the wrecking ball. With a dedicated plan and creative design and construction teams committed to elevating this residence to a showplace worthy of the prestigious neighborhood, the whole-house renovation began.

The exterior brick was painstakingly restored to the original hue, creating a more stately presence. The unused indoor pool area was filled in to create additional living space without exceeding the village FAR requirements. The floor plan was redesigned offering a more open and inviting flow throughout the home to accommodate the homeowners’ enthusiasm for entertaining family and friends. Finally, every interior element from trim to cabinetry was enhanced or completely updated with elegant new finishes and custom features.

What was once a vacant and neglected neighborhood concern has become a magnificent reflection of the homeowners’ vision and appreciation for the past.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago Key Awards were created in 1972 to recognize excellence in housing design, architecture, interior merchandising, remodeling and landscaping. It has since evolved into one of the premier housing programs in the country.
