Weiss Building and Development wins Gold Key Award for Elgin Home

November 16, 2011

Chicagoland Real Estate Forum congratulates Weiss Building and Development for winning a Gold Key Award in the category of “Excellence in Green Construction: Whole House Remodel Design” for 336 Wabash, Elgin.

This home was a foreclosed home that had several additions put on through the years that just did not function well together. The goal of this project was to take one of the worst homes on the block and turn it into one of the best in the area. We wanted to turn a home that had terrible performance and get it certified as a high-performing home. We also wanted to keep it at a strict budget to show people that you can build or remodel “green” affordable. A secondary goal was to keep intact the historical integrity of the original part of the home built in the 1920s.

There were many challenges in the home to turn it into a high-performance home. A new high-efficiency furnace, changing the way the house and walls works with regards to vapor profiles, improving energy efficiency and indoor air quality, making it environmentally friendly and sustainable.

This home received several third-party green certifications through these great achievements. Certifications like NAHB Green Building Program Emerald, LEED for Homes Platinum, ENERGY STAR and Conservation At Home. It was the first NAHB Green Certified Green remodel in Illinois and one of the first 12 the country. It is also one of the first two NAHB Emerald level home in the state and the first to receive LEED Platinum in the remodeling category. It is the first third-party, green-certified home in the Fox Valley region. The Conservation-At-Home certification was received for sustainable landscaping.

This home is also well positioned in walk-about community. There are many choices for public transportation as well. The Metra station and PACE bus stop are nearby.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago Key Awards were created in 1972 to recognize excellence in housing design, architecture, interior merchandising, remodeling and landscaping. It has since evolved into one of the premier housing programs in the country.
