Famous Chicago Real Estate for Rent

November 18, 2011

Want to live in a luxury piece of Chicago real estate that Oprah almost lived in?

Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey is renting out a 4,607-square-foot unit on the sixth floor of a building at 199 E. Lake Shore Drive in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood.

She purchased the eight-room co-op in 2006 for $5.6 million but never moved in.

She has reportedly tried to sell the place in the past for $6 million, but you know how that goes, and is now trying to rent it out.

The price to lease it? A cool $15,000 a month.

Not terrible, considering if you owned it, you’d be dishing out more than $7,000 a month in assessments alone.

The Benjamin Marshall Beaux-Arts style luxury home includes three-full and two-half bathrooms and three bedrooms, including a master suite that measures more than 1,200 square feet.

There is a library, a grand foyer, a sun room, a butler’s pantry, a wine room, a laundry room, a gourmet custom kitchen, 10-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, two fireplaces and a two-car garage.

There are also beautiful views of Oak Street Beach, though it is the view that supposedly curbed Oprah’s love for the place: She reportedly never moved in because she was worried that people could see into her windows.

The luxury building, built in 1913, was once home to funnyman John Candy and actress Holly Hunt.

If this isn’t your cup of tea, don’t worry. Oprah owns a number of other properties in the area, and doesn’t work here anymore, so I’m sure there will be more Chicago real estate options by Oprah in the future.
