Chicago Company Honored for Excellence

A local architectural firm and the Chicago real estate it enhanced has earned a 2012 Award of Excellence by the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Commercial Builders Council.

The awards recognize achievements in design, market appeal, sustainability and overall success of newly built and renovated commercial projects ranging in size from less than 5,000 to more than 100,000 square feet.

“This year’s entries offered us a wide range of project types to choose from, and we were very pleased with the quality of the work presented by our commercial builders,” said Gene Graf III, 2011 chair of the Commercial Builders Council, which sponsors the awards each year.

Chicago’s Bailey Edward Design received a Grand Award for the Thomas J. Waters Elementary School Addition.

“This multipurpose addition prototype, which could easily be replicated in other public schools, includes low-flow plumbing fixtures, a hydronic radiant floor system, solar panels on the roof to heat water for kitchen use and hand washing, and 540-gallon cisterns to catch rainwater for irrigation of the surrounding native plants.”

Bailey Edward, which works all over the Midwest, is a diverse firm that is known for contemporary design as well as historic preservation. Included in its portfolio of projects are homes, parks, schools, military facilities, religious institutions, he nnrgreenhouse,

Entries for the NAHB awards program are submitted in eight categories: green commercial, industrial, institutional/medical, mixed use commercial/residential, recreational and other commercial. This year, seven winners were selected by a panel of industry peers for achieving innovative solutions to project challenges, energy efficiency and design.

*Grand Award: Entertainment Properties Trust, Straub Construction of Shawnee, Kan.

*Grand Award: Princeton Presbyterian Church, Bossart Builders of Flanders, N.J.

*Grand Award: Salina’s Kenwood Cove, Straub Construction of Shawnee, Kan.

*Merit Award: Elan Catering & Events, The Ruby Group of Goshen, N.Y.

*Honorable Mention: President Container, The Ruby Group of Goshen, N.Y.
