Chicago Real Estate Owners Have It Made

December 04, 2011

Chicago is the fourth best city in which to live in the country, according to a new survey that ranks cities worldwide.

Consulting group Mercer compared world cities through a range of factors, including housing, safety, infrastructure, environment, schools, recreation, culture and public transportation for its 2011 Quality of Living Survey.

In a list dominated by European cities, Chicago came in at No. 43 and was only the fourth U.S. city on the list at that point.

Honolulu was the top U.S. city at No. 29; San Francisco tied for the No. 30 spot; and Boston, Massachusetts ranked No. 36.

Chicago actually tied Washington, D.C. at No. 43, but we are in good company, as Madrid also came in at that spot.

Vienna, Austria came in at No. 1 on the list of best world cities; Baghdad, Iraq came in last at No. 221.

“Most of the low-scoring cities are in countries with, civil unrest, high crime levels and little law enforcement,” said Slagin Parakatil, Senior Researcher at Mercer.

“The top-ranking cities for personal safety and security are in politically stable countries with good international relations and relatively sustainable economic growth.”
