Home Product Recalled for Radioactivity

January 14, 2012

If you recently purchased a metal tissue box from Bed, Bath & Beyond, you may now have radioactive material in your Chicago real estate.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) announced that metal tissue box holders sold in the Chicago area were found to be contaminated with low-levels of cobalt-60, a radioactive material.

Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. is recalling the metal tissue holders, which are in the Dual Ridge Boutique product line. The holders, model number DR9M, were manufactured in India and shipped to stores in 20 states, including at least two in the Chicago area; 1800 N. Clybourne Street, Chicago, and 3232 Lake Avenue, Wilmette.

The IEMA has removed all tissue holders from the store’s shelves to prevent further exposure to employees and customers. Officials say the products don’t pose an immediate health risk but advice anyone who purchased one to get it out of your house.

If you spend 10 hours within one foot of the tissue holder, you would be exposed to the equivalent radiation as a chest x-ray.

Other bath accessories within the same product line were removed and tested, though none showed signs of radioactivity.

“These holders do not pose an immediate health risk, but we always want to prevent unnecessary exposure to radiation,” said IEMA Director Jonathon Monken. “We’re continuing to work closely with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and store officials until we confirm that all items have been located and secured.”

Customers who believe they purchased a tissue box holder from the Dual Ridge Boutique product line should contact Bed, Bath and Beyond at 1-800-462-3966 or bring them back to the store for a full refund.
