Chicago Ranks Prominently Among Visitors and Residents

January 29, 2012

Chicago real estate is the best architecture in the country. That’s not just my opinion, it’s Travel and Leisure readers’ opinions too.

The magazine asked readers, both residents and visitors, to rank 35 U.S. cities on such things as real estate, people, food, entertainment, weather and more.

Beautiful Wrigley BuildingChicago earned the No. 1 spot out of all the cities for Architecture/Cool buildings by residents and visitors alike.

Unsurprisingly, Chicago was also ranked No. 1 in the country by residents and visitors for pizza.

Other positive rankings include:

*Home decor and design stores: No. 2 by visitors; No. 8 by residents

*Public transportation and pedestrian-friendliness: No. 3 by visitors; No. 2 by residents

*Theater/performance art: No. 2 by visitors; No. 3 by residents

*Museums/galleries: No. 3 by visitors; No. 4 by residents

*Luxury stores: No. 2 by visitors; No. 6 by residents

*Sports-crazed: No. 3 by visitors; No. 4 by residents

*Proud of their city: No. 4 by visitors; No. 7 by residents

Of course, we didn’t rank in the top 10 in all categories. In fact, Chicago was voted the worst city for Winter by visitors and residents.

Here are some other categories in which we appear along the bottom:

*Weather: No. 34 by visitors; No. 35 by residents

*Affordability: No. 25 by both visitors and residents

*Peace and quiet: No. 26 by visitors; No. 25 by residents

*Safety: No. 24 by visitors; No. 25 by residents

*Pet-friendly vacation: No. 23 by visitors; No. 21 by residents

*Offbeat: No. 23 by visitors; No. 22 by residents

*Friendly: No. 22 by visitors: No. 18 by residents

While most of the visitor and resident scores were within a few points of each other, there was one category in which the two groups disagreed: Driving ability. Chicagoan votes ranked us at No. 8. Visitors apparently don’t have as much faith in our residents behind the wheel; their votes put us at No. 19.
