One Chicagoland Carpet Company Snags Another

February 06, 2012

They own two of the most recognizable phone numbers in the Chicago area and I called them both when I bought my Chicago real estate. Now they are one company. Sort of.

I’m talking about Empire Carpet and Luna Carpet. Empire Today LLC has purchased rival Luna for an undisclosed amount of money.

But don’t worry, we won’t have to sacrifice one catchy jingle for another.

Both brands will continue to operate under their own names, and no one is expected to be laid off in the merger.

“Both Empire Today and Luna will continue to be managed separately and there are no anticipated changes with the Luna brand or its organizational structure,” Marlo Michalek of Empire told the Tribune. “From a consumer perspective, there are no changes. Consumers will still have the opportunity to shop with both brands.”

Chicago-based Empire was founded in 1959 as a family-owned business. It is known for its shop-at-home format, its next-day installation, its famous commercials (sing it with me: 5-8-8-2-300 Empire!) and its spokesman, the Empire Man, Elmer Lynn Hauldren, who passed away in his Evanston home last April. Bellwood-based Luna Carpet was founded in 1958 as a family business. While it offers shop-at-home service and a catchy phone-number jingle (773-202-da-da-da-da-LUNA!), it also has five retail locations throughout Chicagoland in Addison, Deerfield, Lake Zurich, Naperville and Schaumburg.
