Know What You are Getting for Valentine’s Day

February 12, 2012

Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that you can honor from the comfort of your own Chicago real estate by simply picking up the phone or going online and ordering flowers. In fact, it is the floral business’ busiest day of the year, even bigger than Mother’s Day. But which florist to pick?

According to the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and northern Illinois (BBB), complaints about florists increased 47 percent in 2011 compared to 2010, so be careful when choosing your professional and placing your order.

“When buying flowers consumers should be especially careful when making the purchase online or over the phone,” said Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the BBB serving Chicago and northern Illinois. “Consumers need to review the description of the floral arrangement or any other gift purchased online or in conversation with the florist or sales person.”

Bernas says to pay attention to options including size of arrangements, color of flowers and vase, delivery in a box or vase and inclusion of an enclosure or gift card. Some of those options could incur an additional charge.

“Another important point is to make sure that your order is clear and detailed,” said Bernas. “Review the guarantee on the site or with the salesperson. This will help alleviate your concerns about quality or delivery.”

Before ordering flowers, chocolates or any other gift for Valentine’s Day or any day, you should check out the company on the  BBB’s Business Review. Also, be wary of an e-mail you receive about buying a product from an unknown sender. Fake e-cards from hackers can end up compromising your computer’s safety.

Hope you have a fulfilling and happy Valentine’s Day.
