There’s a lot going on around Chicagoland this weekend.

No need to hop on a plane to celebrate Hollywood’s biggest night. With a little planning, you can host your own fantastic Oscar party at home.

Here are some suggestions for bringing the glamour to the Chicago area to celebrate the 84th Annual Academy Awards this Sunday.

*Clean: Yes, you must get your house in order for people to come over. Want to take some short-cuts? Click here for that story.

*Carpet: Got to get a red carpet, and it doesn’t have to be an actual carpet. Use a blanket, some red fabric or felt or even a bunch of red pieces of paper taped together. Lay it at the door and your guests will feel special when they walk in.

*Colors: The Oscars are gold, so consider throwing some of it around for ambiance. Even Christmas lights will do the trick. You can get gold and black plates, napkins, balloons, tablecloths etc. at the party store or even a dollar store. Both might have more extensive Oscar decorations if you are looking for more.

*Food: Finger foods will do here nicely. Throw in some popcorn (a must for movie-goers) and consider making edibles that represent some of the nominated movies, like a cake for “Bridesmaids” or something you would find at a baseball game for “Moneyball.”

*Dress: Ask your attendees to dress up as a character from one of the movies nominated for an award, or declare cocktail attire and grab a feather boa and you’ll feel it’s Hollywood in Chicago.

*Play: Start the party an hour before the Academy Awards so you can vote on the best and worst dressed. Make up ballots and have your guests predict the Oscar winners. For kids, (or adults!) create an Oscar Bingo game.

*Click: You may not have seen any of the nominated movies, but you should know what channel the award show will be on. You can find the Oscars on ABC-7 on Sunday, with coverage starting as early as 4 p.m.

Don’t want to stay home and don’t want to fly across the country? Attend Chicago’s only official Academy-sanctioned Oscar Night America party, where there will be a real red carpet event at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St., Chicago, on Sunday, Feb. 26 from 6 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $100, but at least there will be no clean-up for you to do after this party.
