Big Milestones Around Chicago this Weekend

There’s a Dodransbicentennial birthday occurring this Sunday.

Chicago is turning 175 years old!

The Windy City is marking this fantastic milestone with 175 Days to Love Chicago, which features 175 days of events, festivals, promotions and guided tours starting on its birthday, March 4, 2012 and going through August 26.

Admission is free to all Illinois residents on Sunday at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark Street, which is hosting a City of Chicago birthday party from noon to 5 p.m.

There are events planned throughout the day, including the Ceremonial Program at 1 p.m., complete with free birthday cake, kids crafts and entertainment from 1 to 4 p.m., and a Four-Star Panel at 3:30 p.m. that will discuss how elements including architecture, literature and politics have created an identity for Chicago.

While Chicago celebrates its Dodransbicentennial this weekend, one of its suburbs is honoring its Quasquicentennial.

Highwood starts celebrating its 125th anniversary on Saturday, March 3, with the Sky Lantern Festival, which will include events throughout the downtown area from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a spectacular display of lanterns that will fill the night sky at 6 p.m.

The festival kicks off a year-long celebration in the northern suburb.

Centennialed-out? Here are some things going on around Chicagoland that don’t have to do with birthdays.

*Chicago Bike Swap: More than 50 bike shops, merchants, nonprofits and individuals will be at the Pulaski Park Fieldhouse, 1419 W. Blackhawk, Chicago, on Saturday, March 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. offering great deals on bikes, parts, gear and events. There will be demos, games, activities and lunch. You can even bring your bike to sell or trade! There is a fee to enter for anyone over 13.
