Chicago Companies Earn Industry Esteem

Two Chicago real estate companies are among the most highly regarded companies in the world.

Fortune magazine has released 2012 list of “World’s Most Admired Companies.” The companies were chosen by industrial experts based on nine criteria, from investment value to corporate social responsibility, and each was assessed a score. You can view the most reputable companies on several lists, including the Top 50 Most Admired, the best by industry and the best by state.

Apple earned an overall score of 8.42 and was ranked as the No. 1 most admired company in the world for the fifth year in a row. Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, ranked No. 7 overall with a score of 7.34, was the highest-rated real estate company in the world.

When it comes to the real estate industry, Chicago-based Equity Residential is the fourth most admired real estate company in the world. Chicago-based Jones Lang LaSalle was ranked as a contender at No. 6.

To be considered a Most Admired, a company must score in the top half of its industry survey. The rest are listed as contenders.

Here are the World’s Most Admired Real Estate Companies, according to Fortune magazine, and each company’s overall score.

Most Admired:

1. Vornado Realty Trust 6.86

2. Simon Property Group 6.66

3. Host Hotels & Resorts 6.35

4. Equity Residential 6.03


5. CBRE Group 6.00

6. Jones Lang LaSalle 5.90

7. Realogy 4.50

8. General Growth Properties 4.14

Equity Residential was rated the 7th Most Admired company in Illinois. The No. 1 spot went to Abbott Laboratories. Jones Lang LaSalle was listed as the No. 2 contender in Illinois.
