Beauty to Fill the Chicago Area

Looking for some inspiration? There will be plenty around Chicagoland this weekend, whether you are interested in improving your metro Chicago real estate, learning how to live more sustainably, expanding your family’s horizons or getting ready for Spring.

Let’s get to it!

Naperville Home Show: This event features hundreds of the latest home products and services that can help you realize your dreams to repair, rehab or beautify your home. Home-improvement specialists, both large and small, will be on hand to meet with you, and there will be cooking demonstrations and food tastings, drawings, giveaways and more. The free show will be at the Players Sports Center, 1740 Quincy Ave., Naperville on Friday, March 9 from 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gardening Exchange Event: This is the second annual community event and fundraiser, and it’s set for Saturday, March 10 at the Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse, 3501 N. Kilbourn Ave., Chicago. There, you, your friends and neighbors, ages 18 and up, can take basic organic gardening classes and find gently used gardening and cooking tools at bargain prices. Proceeds benefit Greenhouse programs that connect kids to nature and healthy foods. The event is free until 1 p.m. and $20 for the workshop series from 1 to 4 p.m.

Chicago Flower & Garden Show: This show kicks off on Saturday, March 10 and goes through Sunday, March 18 at Navy Pier. This year’s “Hort Couture” theme will feature more than 25 fantastic gardens displaying the latest flower and plant design trends, over 100 gardening, landscape and horticulture vendors, seminars, workshops, a kids area and more. Going Green Matters: The Woman’s Club of Wilmette, 930 Greenleaf Ave., Wilmette, is hosting this free environmental fair on Sunday, March 11 from 1 to 5 p.m. Learn ways to live more eco-friendly, visit school and community exhibits, relax in the “Go Green Cafe,” enjoy food demonstrations and check out plug-in cars. Bring your electronics and batteries for recycling.

Chicago’s Only Castle The History of Givins’ Irish Castle and Its Keepers: This 85-minute film being shown at the Chicago Museum, 1601 N. Clark St., Chicago, on Sunday, March 11 at 1:30 p.m., tells the tale of Chicago’s only castle, which was constructed in 1886 on the South Side, and five of its keepers. A Q&A session with filmmaker Errol Magidson will follow. Entry is free for members or with paid museum admission.

Chi-Town Jazz Festival 2012: There are concerts all over town this weekend, including in Evanston, Lake Forest and Chicago, for this third annual event. Proceeds benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Catholic Charities of Chicago. Click the link for information on artists, venues and tickets.

Maple Tree Tapping with the Family: Come welcome spring with some free maple tree tapping from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 at the North Park Village Nature Center, 5801 N. Pulaski, Chicago. Families with children ages 6 and up are welcome to come and learn the entire maple syrup story. This event is free, but you must register at 312-744-5472. Come from 11 a.m. to noon and you’ll hear a free concert by the Civic Orchestra and their Percussion Trio.

Build and Grow Kids Clinic: All local Lowe’s locations will be hosting a workshop this Saturday, March 10 from 10 to 11 a.m., as kids will get to build their own basketball game while learning how to work with tools. Registration is not required, but there is only a limited number of kits at each store. Click the link to sign up.
