Save Water and Money on New Homes in Chicago with Fix a Leak Week

March 12, 2012

EPA Water SenseOver 1 trillion gallons of water are wasted every year because of leaky pipes, toilets, showerheads and other leaky household plumbing in the U.S., according to the EPA. These leaks not only devastate a precious natural resource, but they can really add up on our water bills. But the good news is that most leaks are easy and inexpensive to fix. Fix a Leak Week, March 12-18, the EPA’s WaterSense program educates and encourages Americans on fixing leaks around the home, to save water and to save money.

It is estimated that the average American home leaks over 10,000 gallons of water per year, the equivalent of washing 280 loads of laundry, taking more than 600 showers or meeting the average family’s water needs for an entire month.

WaterSense says check, twist and replace to find and fix leaks. Check for leaks, twist and tighten pipe connections and replace fixtures when necessary. When replacing plumbing fixtures, be sure to choose those with the WaterSense label, which use 20 percent less water.

Delta Faucet Company, the WaterSense Maufacturer Partner of the Year, along with the EPA, GreenPlumbers USA, United Way, Ronald McDonald House, and local water utilities and governments across the nation, will fix leaks in more than 1,000 low-income households and community facilities in cities throughout the U.S., including homes in Chicago, saving millions of gallons of water this year alone.
