Xeriscape for a Beautiful, Water and Time-Saving Yard

March 15, 2012

XeriscapingDoes springtime bring dreams of a gorgeous lawn that you wish you had but the costs of time and money in sodding, watering and maintenance are just too much to bear?

Change your way of thinking about what a beautiful yard looks like and you’ll find that a gorgeous yard can be less expensive and less work than you might think. Think xeriscaping. Traditionally considered a landscaping alternative for water-strapped desert areas, xeriscaping is quickly becoming a smart choice for landscapes across the nation.

Xeriscaping is a form of landscaping or gardening in ways that decrease or eliminate the need for supplemental irrigation. In xeriscaping, plants are selected for their suitability to the local climate and care is taken in the design to avoid losing water to evaporation and run-off.

The benefits of xeriscaping go beyond water saving to saving time, money and the environment. These landscapes are less maintenance because by design, the plants grow where they’re supposed to, so require less care and maintenance and fewer pesticides. And there’s no need to sacrifice grass completely – if you need a little bit of grass for your dog or for kids to play on – a patch of hardy, water-saving grass can easily be worked into your landscape design. A recent article in Builder magazine further explains the benefits of xeriscaping, and includes a slideshow of beautifully xeriscaped homes (you might be surprised by how much green you can still get in your yard – it’s not all rocks and muted cacti).

These yards don’t require the huge amounts of labor and water that fully-grassed lawns do, they stay tidy and look well-organized, and that translates to curb appeal and increased property values for Chicago real estate.

Think a little bit more critically about what is important to you in a healthy, attractive yard and consider xeriscaping this spring!
