Take Time to Search Your Home for Mold

April 06, 2012

With this weekend marking the holidays of Passover and Easter, there isn’t much else going on throughout the Chicago area, so we thought this would be a good time to tout the benefits of spring cleaning.

Taking the time to clean out your home will not only make your Chicago real estate cleaner, it will make it healthier. A deep cleaning can help to get rid of dust mites, pet hair and mold, which all can be contributing to an unhealthy home and unhealthy inhabitants.

mold on a wallMold is one of the biggest contributors to indoor allergies and respiratory problems. It can be found almost anywhere, as all it needs to grow is moisture and oxygen. Did you know that mold can grow not only on foods and wood, but also in carpet, paper and insulation?

It is impossible to completely eliminate all mold and mold spores from your home, but it can be controlled.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggests these tips for cleaning mold in your home:

*If you find mold on a hard surface, clean it off with detergent and water, and then dry the area completely.

*Get rid of any excess water or moisture around the area in which you found mold.

*Absorbent surfaces, such as carpeting and ceiling tiles, that exhibit signs of mold cannot be cleaned and should be replaced.

*Check your plumbing and fix any leaking pipes.

*Clean and repair your roof gutters.

*Replace sponges and bath products like loofahs on a regular basis, as these are breeding grounds for bacteria and mold.

*Keep your indoor humidity below 60 percent.

If water leaks or spills in your home, clean it immediately. If the area is dried within the first 24 to 48 hours after a leak or spill, most likely, mold will not grow.
