Your Homeowner’s Insurance Protects More than Just Your Home

April 15, 2012

Make sure your homeowners insurance includes your petWhile it is commonly known that

homeowner’s insurance protects the structure of your home, including the interior and the exterior, there are many other facets that a policy can cover. For instance, did you know that homeowner’s insurance protects you in the event that your pet harms someone or something? This is an important facet of insurance that is rarely mentioned, and Linda Rey has a great article about it on the Equifax Finance Blog titled, “

Your Homeowners Insurance Policy and Fido.”

Homeowner’s Insurance most notable comes into play when your pet bites someone, which can cause

insurance claims that average at $19,000. Due to this hefty price, insurance companies often either limit coverage or often attach surcharges for pets to be covered. Still, this is a small cost to pay compared to the unexpected out of pocket expense.

You should know what the coverage is and what restrictions there are for your pet, and shop around. Some insurance companies have a list of animals which their actuaries have deemed dangerous or questionable and may not offer any coverage for those animals. Many large dog breeds are on a common version of that list as well as exotic animals like pet alligators, bears and non-human primates.

The Equifax Finance Blog has more information in addition to expert articles on taxes, real estate, retirement and many other tips for

saving money.
