Oprah Selling Chicago Condo, Ex-Sox Thome Buying Burr Ridge Mansion

May 31, 2012

Oprah Winfrey

Two Chicago area celebs have made real estate news. One is trying to unload a property while the other just purchased a new home.

Oprah Winfrey has slashed the price on her Chicago condo located at 199 East Lake Shore Drive. Originally purchased for $5.6 million back in 2006, the 3-bedroom, 4-bathroom co-op now sits on the market for a mere $2.8 million. As powerful as Oprah is, she is no match for Chicago’s real estate woes.

For those interested in purchasing a residence once owned by the Queen of Talk, get ready for a let down. The celebrity and philanthropist never moved into the condo. Since ending her show in Chicago, Oprah spends most of her time residing at her California and Hawaii cribs. However, Oprah still owns a duplex in Chicago’s Gold Coast area.

So what will $2.8 million get you?

Built in 1913 by architect Benjamin Marshall, the condo features 4,000 square feet, the previously mentioned 3-bedrooms and 4-bathrooms, 10-foot ceilings, two fireplaces, an inner foyer, a library, a solarium, a formal dining room, a butler’s pantry, a wine room, a custom eat-in kitchen, a 1,241-square-foot master bedroom with his and hers bathrooms and an en-suite guest bedroom.

UPDATE: The unit is now under contract. The pending price and buyer info are not yet available.

In other Chicago celebrity real estate news, former Chicago White Sox slugger Jim Thome purchased a $4.6 million Burr Ridge mansion. Even though Thome currently plays for the Philadelphia Phillies, the slugger and his family could not part from the Chicago area.

The Burr Ridge mansion is 8,154 square feet and features six full baths, two half baths, hardwood floors, a theater, custom cabinetry and a seven-car garage. Just in case the Thomes get bored with baseball, there is a tennis court on the 2-acre property.

The Thomes purchased the property for $4.995 million.
