June is National Homeownership Month

Family moving into homeJune is National Homeownership Month and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) wants to spread the word on the many opportunities available for both current and future homeowners. Going hand in hand with the month’s spotlight on homeownership is the NAHB’s Protect Homeownership website that focuses on protecting homeowners from losing benefits due to legislative and regulatory proposals.

“Anyone thinking of buying a home shouldn’t wait any longer,” said NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg. “Housing markets around the country are improving, home prices have stabilized,  there is a great selection of available homes for sale, and interest rates are at near historic low levels.”

Mr. Rutenberg is off on one thing. Interest rates are not near historically low levels, they are at record lows. The 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.75 percent, a record low. Last year at this time, the 30-year rate was 4.55 percent. Likewise, the 15-year fixed mortgage hit a record low as well this week, dropping to 2.97 percent. The 15-year rate a year ago was 3.74 percent.

With seven out of ten American who do not currently own a home having a home purchase on their wishlist, the time and conditions are very ripe to become a homeowner.

“Homeownership remains a core value to American families,” said Rutenberg. “Even more important than the financial advantages of homeownership, is that first and foremost, a home is where your family can relax, spend quality time together and build lifelong memories.”

If one can get the credit (still a major hurdle in for many potential homebuyers), June is a great month to take advantage of the low home prices and record mortgage rates.
