Pestered by an Infestation? You’re Not Alone

June 17, 2012

Things aren’t getting much better bug-wise in Chicago real estate.

Terminix has released its annual list of Most Bedbug-Infested Cities in the country. Chicago came in at No. 4, the same as last year.

Two years ago, the Windy City scurried in at No. 5.

Bedbug stains are evidence of a bedbug infestation.

At least we didn’t grow in bedbug population this year.

Philadelphia won the title of most bedbug-infested U.S. city, taking over the top spot from New York, which held the title for two years.

“Bedbugs continue to increase their presence across the U.S.,” said Stoy Hedges, an entomologist with Terminix. “While major metropolitan areas are most at risk, it is important to note that bedbugs have been spotted in cities and towns across the country.

“Bedbugs can cause itchy welts and rashes, and may go undetected for months in a home or business. It is important for consumers to know the signs of an infestation and to have their home inspected by a professional if they suspect a problem.”

When you are changing the sheets on your beds, check for these signs of a bedbug infestation:

*Dark spots, which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker would

*Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny and white

*Skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger

*Live bed bugs

*Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses

Find evidence, call a professional.
