HBAGC Golf Outing Surprises Vet with New Home

June 26, 2012

The Residential Construction Employers Council/Young Builders Council Golf Outing presented by the Home Builders Association of Great Chicago‘s (HBAGC) was a huge success in more ways than one.

The golf outing took place last Thursday, June 21 at the beautiful Highlands of Elgin golf course. The weather was in our favor as the day remained mild in temperature enabling everyone to have a great time on the course.

Participants and sponsors (including mRELEVANCE, Sun-Times Media and Inland Home Mortgage) mingled and networked as everyone tried their best to avoid hitting this reporter and his photographer in the mRELEVANCE-sponsored golf cart (one golf ball crashing down on the hood of our cart is not too bad for a moving target).

The highlight of the event was the presentation of a brand new, mortgage-free home given to war veteran Nick Mapson on behalf of the HBAGC and New American Homes, Inc. as well as other groups who got involved in making this truly unique gift become a reality.

The Sugar Grove native was injured in Afghanistan when his Humvee drove over a bomb in 2004. Mapson sustained third-degree burns to his face, arms and hands and was put into a medically induced coma. Mapson survived his injuries and received the Purple Heart for his service.

In honor of Mapson’s service to his country, the HBAGC, New American Homes, Inc. Chicago NFL Players Association Former Players Chapter and others came together, along with a $200,000 donation from an anonymous donor, to provide a new home for the wounded veteran.

Mapson was not aware that the event was in his honor. Two weeks prior, he had submitted a letter to Operation Finally Home, an organization that collects letters from wounded vets interested in the Touchdown for Homes program that renovates or builds homes for veterans. Mapson was told the golf outing was merely the next step in the review process so he arrived with his wife Jackie and 1-year old son Jaden with the hope that he would remain eligible for the new home.

After the players finished their game of golf, skydivers holding American flags descended upon the course. Rita Unzner, executive director of HBAGC, announced to the Mapsons that “you are the family that we’re building this home for.”

The emotional moment will forever be remembered by all in attendance. The Mapsons are set to receive the keys to their new home on August 18. Chicagoland Real Estate Forum congratulates the Mapsons and thanks all the sponsors who made this remarkable day come true.
