New Site Connects Chicago New Homes and School Districts

July 11, 2012

school busesLooking to buy a Chicago new home in a great school district before school starts back this fall? Your home search just got a little easier with the recent introduction of SchoolSparrow.

“It’s hard to find where the good schools are, and it’s even harder to find the real estate in the right school boundaries,” says Tom Brown, SchoolSparrow’s founder and chief designer. “It was even hard for me, and I’m a real-estate broker with access to the [multiple listing service].”

SchoolSparrow’s site is a great resource for families on the hunt for a new home. The site guarantees that all of its information is accurate, unlike data that realtors may give out. Brown said that he has input the zigzagging boundaries of the city’s more than 400 public schools, and that the site cross-references available listings with individual schools.

The site, which was launched as a freestanding product in May, ranks each school according to test-score data. Brown plans to later add in additional information such as safety scores and rates of parental involvement. Users are also able to search for rentals and for-sale homes by school district, home size or by price.

This site has already brought great relief to many Chicago real estate buyers who were frustrated by previous lack of or incorrect information. Brown also runs another resourceful site, LiveByTransit, which allows home buyers to find homes near Chicago’s public transit.
