Chicago Clean Energy to Bring Relief to Area Residents

August 04, 2012

chicago clean energyChicago real estate residents may soon get the relief they need when it comes to air quality if a new piece of legislation is passed by Governor Patrick Quinn. The Chicago Clean Energy project has proposed a modern coal-gasification plant with stringent air permits that will also enable it to clean-up an existing 140-acre brownfield site on the southeast side of Chicago.

The new facility, if approved, would be operating under the country’s most stringent emission standards, and will exceed proposed EPA greenhouse gas limits by capturing 85 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. The site scheduled for clean-up is located at the former Chicago LTV Steel property, which has been found to have highly dangerous soil contaminants.

The technology used by Chicago Clean Energy uses a chemical process to produce substitute natural gas and capture and remove impurities. Removing component elements such as mercury, sulfur and argon is essential to producing the substitute natural gas. Plus, by removing these elements, they can be reused in agriculture, manufacturing or construction projects, or safely disposed of.

“We are hopeful Governor Quinn will approve the measure and put Illinois at the forefront of new clean energy technology,” said Ted Stanlos, president of the Calumet Area Industrial Council.  “We need this project to help revitalize our community and we ask that Governor Quinn move this project forward immediately.”
