What to Ask Your Moving Company

August 21, 2012

poplar grove real estateFinding a new home is an exhausting endeavor, and you’ll likely run through the entire emotional spectrum during the process. From the excitement of viewing new homes to the pride in showing off your Chicago new home, there are a lot of ups and downs in between. One of the biggest “downs” is the actual move – which can cause all kinds of aches and pains – emotionally, mentally and physically!

Homefinder.com offers some tips to help make the move a little bit easier in their article “Top Ten Questions to Ask When Booking a Moving Company.”

The article recommends researching three moving companies and asking ten important questions to help you make the best choice for the company that will be handling all of your belongings.

Find out how long the company has been in business. You want a company that has been moving for some time. You’ll benefit from their experience, processes and dependability. If they have been in business for many years, they must be doing it right.

Find out if their quotes are binding. Be sure you receive a binding quote that protects you from last-minute surprise fees. Some companies may charge additional fees for elevators, long hallways, difficult/winding or steep driveways that require smaller trucks, etc.

Find out what types of payment they accept. The article advises against doing business with companies that only accept cash. Also find out how much of a deposit is due (and if it’s refundable) and how much is due on delivery day.

Find out about packing, loading and supplies. All moving companies have different policies on these items, so it’s best to get the answers upfront so you’ll know what to expect. It may be less expensive for you to purchase your own pack supplies and pack yourself, but find out the liabilities of doing that first – with many companies, if you pack your own boxes; the moving company is not responsible for damages to those items during the move.

The article has lots of additional tips to help you choose the best moving company. Do you have any other tips you can share from past experiences?
