August 24, 2012

Top Chicago area public schoolsWhen considering purchasing a Chicago new home, one of the most important factors for many parents and families is the quality of schools your children will attend. For many, figuring out which ones are truly better than rest can be difficult. To help families stay informed about how their area’s schools are doing, Chicago Magazine recently published rankings of the best public schools in and around Chicago.

The data that Chicago Magazine used for their rankings comes from state report cards for the 2010-2011 academic year. The magazine ranked schools based on a number of factors including student-to-teacher ratio (elementary schools), graduation rate (high schools), test scores and spending per pupil. In addition, the rankings are broken down into these regions: Chicago, Cook County, Dupage County, Lake County and other suburbs.

Top Chicago elementary schools include Decatur Classical School, Edison Regional Gifted Center, Skinner North Classical School, Keller Regional Gifted Center and Poe Elementary Classic School; the average enrollment of these schools was 230 students with an average class size of 27.6 students and an average ISAT score of 99.84.

Top Chicago high schools include Northside College Prep, Walter Payton College Prep, Whitney Young Magnet High, Jones College Prep and Brooks College Prep Academy; the average enrollment at these schools was 1,149 students with an average graduation rate of 96.4 percent and an average ACT score of 26.2

When it comes time for you to purchase your next home in the Chicago area, be sure to consult Chicago Magazine’s school rankings to see how your new schools stack up. For more on the latest Chicago real estate news, check out our site.
