New Chicago Riverwalk Expansion Plans

October 12, 2012

new Chicago real estate coming to Chicago riverwalkLast week, mayor Rahm Emanuel discussed plans for the Chicago River’s riverwalk expansion, which will add more restaurants and recreation opportunities to downtown Chicago real estate.

The Chicago riverwalk will be expanded by six blocks, and each block will have a theme. For example, “The Marina” will be the name of the block from State to Dearborn, and will be used for restaurant space and public seating. The “Cove” from Dearborn to Clark will offer kayak rentals.

The main goal of the project is to create more recreation and dining options along the river as a way of drawing in more tourists as well as boosting the local economy.

Last April, the state of Illinois pledged that it will spend $10 million to clean up the Chicago River’s high volume of wastewater. Emanuel says that he hopes one day the river will be clean enough for fishing and swimming. He also believes that expanding the riverwalk will be the first step in making the Chicago River a more desirable destination.
