What Consumers Want in Chicago Real Estate

November 25, 2012

chicago real estate homeowner surveyWant to know what owners of Chicago real estate really want in a home? decided to find out in their annual “What Do New Homebuyers Want” survey. Builder Homesite is a group of 32 of the nation’s largest builders that focuses on increasing awareness of the benefits of buying a new home.

The number one request of Chicago homebuyers? Lower cost per square foot! According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average home size is 2,438 square feet. The average price of a Chicago home is $214,000, so the $87 per square foot average is still a bit too pricey for many Chicago area homeowners.

The second request is more living space, and many Chicago area builders are adding features such as bonus rooms and breakfast nooks in order to meet this demand. Chicago homeowners also requested that they want to see lower maintenance costs in new homes.

The other choices on the Builder Homesite survey are as follows, though results were only given for the top three requests in each region.

  • Quality of construction.
  • Safer neighborhood.
  • Better floor plans.
  • Energy efficiency.
  • Architecture/overall design.

Chicago homebuyers were considered part of the North Central region of the United States, which includes 11 other states in addition to Illinois.

Which options would you vote for?
