If you want to reduce the energy bills for your Cook County new homes this winter, try following some of these tips:

  • Hire a contractor to perform an in-home evaluation. A good contractor will use high-quality diagnostic equipment to generate a custom list of suggested home improvements.
  • Properly maintain your heating system. Find out what maintenance is required and stay on top of the recommended maintenance checks.
  • Seal air leaks and add insulation. Duct sealing can be a great DIY project!
  • Reduce heat loss from your fireplace by keeping it closed unless a fire is burning.
  • Turn down the temperature on your water heater so that it remains at 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Water heating can account for 14 to 25 percent of home energy usage, so this is a great way to cut costs.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. When used properly, this device can save you more than $150 a year!
  • While asleep or at work, turn your thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Don’t be afraid to contact your utility companies and ask if they offer any energy discount programs.

Learning more about energy efficiency can help you save money not only in the winter, but year round!
