Greatrooms Designers & Builders, Inc. Wins Gold Key Award for Best Kitchens

December 15, 2012

Chicago Real Estate Forum and Marketing RELEVANCE congratulate for winning a Gold in for .

Greatrooms Designers & Builders, Inc. stated: When designing the kitchen at 1518 Parkview Drive we were looking to re-use as many of the existing cabinets as possible. The kitchen was outdated and the cabinet fronts had seen better days, but the cabinet boxes were still in good shape. In addition to updating the aesthetic, the homeowners wanted to add a significant amount of detail to the space.

The elimination of soffits is a part of almost every kitchen renovation that we do. This project was different since we were re-using the existing cabinet boxes. A second row of upper cabinets was added to fill the space that the soffits once filled. A parting bead separates the two rows and creates a nice finishing touch.

Changing the window above the kitchen sink was a perfect opportunity to create a focal point. The square top window was replaced with an arch top window. A custom arched valance was fabricated to follow the radius of the arch.

The island size was increased to allow for a new 36-inch cooktop, in lieu of the original 30-inch cooktop. Three oversized corbels were added at the back and one side of the island. They allow for a small seating overhang, but they are fantastic pieces that take the design of the island from typical to one with a focal point.

There was 18 inches of space at the end of the sink elevation that was not being used. It was a great place to add a new base cabinet and a new upper cabinet. This extended the kitchen and it allowed us to increase the size of the island without it feeling out of proportion.

Additional details that contributed to the transformation of the kitchen are:

1) The addition of a mitered door style with more detail than the original doors.

2) The cabinets were painted a linen white (instead of bright white) and a glaze was added.

3) A two piece roped crown completes the upper cabinets.
