Greatrooms Designers & Builders, Inc. Wins Gold Key Award for Kitchens.

December 16, 2012

Chicago Real Estate Forum and Marketing RELEVANCE congratulate for winning a Gold in for .

The kitchen at 1005 Ashley Lane was outdated and poorly laid out. A range that was too tight in the corner of the kitchen, a lack of storage, dark stained cabinets, wallpapered soffits and fluorescent lighting over the island were just a few of the things that needed to be addressed.

The appliance sizes were too small for a family and for the size of the home. When in design we determined that removing the walk-in pantry was going to significantly impact the design of the kitchen. This allowed us to include a cabinet pantry, a 48-inch refrigerator, and a 48-inch range.

Prior to the renovation there was a large area of unusable space between the kitchen and breakfast room. The clearances were too tight to make the island any larger so there was no good way to use the space. By removing the walk in pantry we were able to increase the island by 22 inches. Not only does this create more balance between the two spaces, but there is additional storage at the island.

The wet bar was also included in the kitchen renovation. There was an undersized pass through to the family room that was closed up during the design process. This provided additional storage and has become a great focal point.

Painted cabinets that have been glazed and distressed have replaced the dated, dark stained cabinetry. The homeowner loved the idea of distressing the cabinets so that when her teenage boys ding them it looks like it belongs and makes the kitchen feel significantly lighter. In addition to the finishes, several lighting changes make an impact. A new island light replaced the fluorescent light over the island and under cabinet lighting and new can lights have been installed.
