ID theft Protection for holiday giftsAs we are coming down to some of the last few days to make holiday purchases, the convenience of online shopping for pick-up and overnight shipping has a strong allure compared to running to stores. However, indulging online shopping does have its drawbacks, and just like you would be careful with your valuables in crowded malls to avoid a pickpocket, you should take care to make sure your identity isn’t stolen while shopping online.

ID theft protection:

  • Use only sites you trust – be careful to shop from reputable sellers, and keep in mind that paying a little more for the peace of mind of shopping with a big name like Amazon may be worth it if your information is compromised at a lesser retailer. Similarly, if you are directed to a smaller merchant from a larger one (out of stock or private seller situations), make sure you they have a good reputation by checking reviews.
  • Don’t store your information on the site – this is another convenience, but leaving credit card and other personal information on a website leaves you open to risk if the site is compromised. Yes, it can take time to enter in your credit card information each time, but that time is better spent there than dealing with trying to get your identity back.
